Fishy Tale's

We intend to bring you a fishy tale every once in a while, covering many different subjects related to the Diving world

Not only did they finish their PADI Open Water course, but each of them also went on and completed their PADI Dry Suit Specialty on the second day. That's not a bad result in just two days. Like all new divers, none of them knew exactly what to expect when they rolled up at Stoney Cove very early on the Sunday morning. We had told them repeatedly throughout their course that we wouldn't ask them to do any skill that they had not already become profficient with during their pool training and, like all Open Water students, they weren't sure whether to believe us or not! They all wore the worried faces of the condemned on that first morning but that soon changed once they'd completed their initial dive. Dive's two and three were also completed on the first day and with the final dive scheduled for the following morning, the group were justifiably proud of themselves at the end of that first day. As an added bonus, for us, Joanne and Karl were caught unawares by our staged underwater presentation on their anniversary and now have a unique photograph to remember their Open Water weekend with. Congratulations guys. Happy Anniversary!!

Of course, they were not the only divers with us this weekend. Marc Mitchell and Steve Waters completed the final scenarios for their PADI Rescue Diver course and with Steve due to undertake his Enriched Air Specialty next Saturday, he is well on his way towards the PADI Master Scuba Diver rating. (See the PADI Master Scuba Diver web page) By days end, the whole group were more than ready for a well earned couple of beers and a decent meal. Badgers Mount B&B did us proud and fed all 24 divers a great three course meal before we all bimbled off to the land of Nod.

Monday dawned clear, bright and sunny and after a bit of a lie in, well at least compared to Sunday, we were on site for about 0830hrs ready for our next days diving. Our group of intrepid O/W divers were chomping at the bit for their qualifying final dive and if they wore worried looks on Sunday morning, things couldn't have been more different after dive four. There wasn't enough room on their faces for the grins (See main page photo!) They all took advantage of our Open Water weekend special pricing and went on to do a second dive later in the morning to qualify for their PADI Dry Suit Specialty. Two qualifications in one day!

Dave Randall also completed the same Specialty on the Monday and consequently joins the ranks of UK divers that dive the sensible way; Warm and dry! Another of the UK's popular Specialties was completed by Kevin Stranks and that was the PADI Wreck Diver Specialty. Kevin, like Dave, has been a club member for quite a while and with this qualification under his dive belt, is fast ascending the PADI Master Scuba Diver ladder. Well done to both of you.

PADI Advanced Open Water Diver beckoned for Lee Mason on the Monday. He had already completed some of his dives on a previous visit and so bagged the set to earn his badge. Good for you. Dean Silk, one of our PADI Dive Master Trainees or 'Dive Club Slave' to give it its more accurate title, successfully undertook his PADI Digital Underwater Photography Specialty amongst his other duties leaving us all to wonder if maybe we didn't work him hard enough!

Tricia Poxon or 'Miss Daisy' as she's known to us, added the PADI Navigation Specialty to her very impressive ever growing list of Specialty qualifications. She now has so many that there's not enough room on the PADI MSD web page! Come on Trish, let's add that PADI Rescue Diver badge to the list so we can elevate you to the PADI MSD Hall of Fame.

In addition to divers undertaking various courses, a number of club members also came along just to brush up their dive skills or else try out new pieces of equipment. All in all, it was yet another very successfull weekend with everyone completing what they set out to do and having a great deal of fun whilst doing it. The weather was very kind to us in the process so we're kinda' hoping for much of the same during our next training session on the 28th & 29th May. See you there.
