PADI Deep Diver Specialty

Minimum age;15

Minimum qualification; PADI Adventure Diver

If you have completed your PADI Advanced Open Water certification, then you've already had a taster of deep diving.  Of course the term deep is relative and for the AOW courseDeep diving, this means anything between 18 and 30mtrs. For many recreational divers, 30mtrs is quite deep enough thank you very much and that's fine.  If that's your comfort zone for your holiday trips that's great.  For those of you that want to go that bit deeper then this is the Specialty for you.  It will qualify you to depths of 40mtrs.  We're certainly not advocating you dive that deep just cos you can that's a bit pointless but there are times when you find you need that extra qualification.  That wreck at 38mtrs was too deep before.  Now it's not.  You want to see Hammerhead Sharks but theyre at 35mtrs.  Not a problem any more.  As you can see, there needs to be a reason to dive deeper and you wont need to do it every time you dive, but its a very handy qualification to have should you wish to.

We'll show you the benefits and the potential pitfalls of deep diving.  We'll take a look at the various equipment options for diving at depth and talk about the reasoning behind it.  Diving deeper not only opens up great possibilities, it also places greater responsibility on safety for you and your dive buddy.  Your bottom time is shorter and your air won't last as long.  Have you got enough gas for the dive and how do you know?  What happens if something goes wrong at 39m?  You won't get much time to sort it out before your No Decompression Limit is upon you.  Have you thought about this?

Incidentally, most overseas diving operators now allow you to dive to the depth of your qualifying agencies certification limits. So theres no more 30mtr maximum limit.  Please ensure your diving insurance allows this because, heaven forbid, if you have an accident at 35m and your certification allows you to go to 30m max (AOW Diver!) then the chances are that your insurance won't cover you!!  A very good reason in its own right to complete this course.

The course consists of one academic portion and four open water dives
