The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is a registered charity (No.209603) which exists to save lives at sea. It provides, on call, the 24-hour service necessary to cover search and rescue requirements to 50 miles out from the coast of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. There are 230 lifeboat stations around the country including the latest stations up the Thames at Gravesend, Tower Bridge, Chiswick and Teddington.

Since its foundation in 1824, over 127,000 people have been rescued.

Southend Lifeboat(our local branch)

Southend is one of the busiest RNLI lifeboat stations in the country averaging around 100 call outs per year.

Being a mile out to sea before the boat is even launched presents this station with one or two unusual problems to overcome. We have the only electric buggy in RNLI operation to speed the crew to the boathouse at the end of  the pier. We also feature the only RNLI man-riding davit which you will not see at any other station.

In its 122 year history the Southend lifeboats have saved over 2,000 lives.

Providing coverage for the whole of the Thames Estuary, the Southend lifeboats work closely with flank RNLI stations Sheerness and Gravesend as well as other organisations such as  H.M.CoastGuard at Southend & Thames control, the RAF Sea King helicopter from R.A.F.Wattisham & of course our friends on the patrol boats of the Southend Borough Council, the 'Alec White II ', the 'Sydney Bates' and the 'Low-way' launch
